This chapter deals with a triplet feel:

and various triplet patterns for the left hand and bass drum. A twenty-four and twelve bar exercise, and variations for the hi hat.
Remember, keep the heavy accent on two and four on the hi hat.








The following page deals with fills, only this time in triplets. Once again, after learning the fills between the bars (as written) try playing over the bars (starting and ending on three).

After learning the triplet pattern: 
and the eighth note pattern: 
go back and replace the hi- hat phrasing with one of the following patterns and then try playing the charts in each chapter again.

Also try playing the snare with the right hand on three and play the charts with your left hand, either on another tom tom or cowbell etc., to give the groove a bi-lateral effect.

In the next selection, "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)," Carlton plays the following eighth note patterns:

He mixes these patterns up throughout the song and again improvising with the snare and bass drum. Remember to keep a heavy accent again on two and four with the hi hat.
This selection is more difficult than the first. If you have trouble, refer back to the eighth-note chapter for the left hand and bass-drum variations.
